San Diego nightlife offers a wide array of options, from cool jazz, to
theater, to gaming and more. The historic Gaslamp
Quarter has by far the most diverse and alive nightlife scene in the
downtown area, offering live music, haute cuisine, cigar bars, dance
clubs and dusky pubs all in a 16½-block radius. Perhaps the most
popular spot in this area is Croce’s
(yes, as in Jim Croce), which offers two restaurants, three bars and
live jazz and R&B nightly. Eclectic Hillcrest, located a bit north
of downtown, is home to some of the city’s best dining and
entertainment.
Some of the most
popular nightspots in San Diego are located right at the water’s edge.
Running along the coast of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach is the lively
Mission Boulevard, offering a swath of bars and clubs that hug the
serene shoreline. In the community of Pacific Beach, Garnet Avenue sees
the most action when the sun goes down.
Nightlife in San Diego
is not complete without experiencing one of the many live performances
offered throughout the city. The San
Diego Opera hosts grand productions between January and May. The
California Ballet Company produces professional ballet year-round. The
Jolla Chamber Music Society features classical concerts and recitals,
and the La Jolla Playhouse
is world-renowned for supporting and developing new art. One of the most
acclaimed theaters in San Diego is the Old
Globe Theatre in Balboa
Park, presenting a wide array of performances ranging from
Shakespeare to Dr. Seuss.
For
some unique nightlife entertainment, check out the Indian gaming casinos
at Barona, Sycuan and Viejas in East County, about a 40-minute drive
from downtown. Also, Tijuana
is just 17 miles south of San Diego, and is an easy commute via the San
Diego Trolley, or even by bus or taxi.
